Education is what makes a person fearless, teaches him the lesson of unity, makes him aware of his rights and inspires him to struggle for his rights.

Education: The Light That Enlightens the World

In a rapidly changing world marked by technological advancements, social complexities, and global challenges, education has become more than just a pathway to employment or social mobility—it is the cornerstone of responsible citizenship, ethical living, and enlightened leadership.

The motto of our church, “Lighted to Lighten”, serves as a timeless reminder of the purpose of true education. We are not merely recipients of knowledge; we are bearers of light. As we receive the light of wisdom, truth, and understanding, we are called to pass it on—to enlighten others, to uplift our communities, and to shape a more just and compassionate world.

Education has immense power to transform society. With the aim of uplifting the community through education, Mar Thoma School, Maharashtra was established in 1982. What began as a humble initiative with just 12 students in the primary section has now grown into a flourishing institution educating over 1,400 students, including those admitted under the RTE Act.

This growth has been made possible through the continuous support of the teachers, staff, parents, the School Governing Council, and the Mar Thoma Syrian Church Chembur, which has consistently upheld the Church’s vision of empowering society through education. As a school under the guidance of the church, our mission is not only academic excellence but moral and spiritual growth. We believe that every child is created in the image of God and endowed with unique potential. Our task is to nurture that potential so that students may shine their light in the darkness of ignorance, injustice, and despair.

We seek to develop not just scholars, but servant-leaders—young people who will lead with integrity, compassion, and a commitment to the common good.

Education as a Transformational Force

Education today must go beyond the transmission of information. It must foster critical thinking, character formation, and a deep sense of purpose. In this context, the words of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the former President of India and a visionary leader, resonate deeply:

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
(Often attributed to Nelson Mandela, but echoed in spirit by Dr. Kalam’s many speeches.)

Dr. Kalam also said:

“Learning gives creativity, creativity leads to thinking, thinking provides knowledge, and knowledge makes you great.”

Such insights remind us that education must ignite curiosity, inspire innovation, and instill values that prepare students not just for exams, but for life.

 Education in the Present Scenario

In today’s digital and post-pandemic world, education faces both unprecedented opportunities and challenges. The rise of AI, climate change, and global conflicts calls for a generation of thoughtful, ethical, and adaptable leaders. It is not enough to be literate; one must be wise. Not enough to be skilled; one must be kind.

This is why schools must become sanctuaries of light—places where minds are sharpened, hearts are molded, and spirits are uplifted. When we educate a child, we light a candle. And in lighting that candle, we push back the darkness.

As Mahatma Gandhi said:

“Literacy in itself is no education. Literacy is not the end of education or even the beginning. By education I mean an all-round drawing out of the best in the child and man—body, mind and spirit.”

Our school is supported by a team of well-qualified and dedicated teachers from Pre-Primary to Class X, who work tirelessly to impart knowledge and empower students—the future citizens of our nation.

We emphasize holistic development by integrating academics with arts, sports, and co-curricular activities. Alongside academic excellence, we instill values of discipline and good manners in our students.

We believe that parents play a vital role in shaping the character and future of their children. Their active involvement is essential in nurturing responsible and well-rounded individuals. Regular PTA meetings serve as a valuable platform for collaboration and continuous improvement. With the collective efforts of our dedicated teachers and supportive parents, we are committed to shaping a bright future for our students—thereby fulfilling our school’s vision and mission.

As members of the School Governing Council, we are humbled and honored to be stewards of this sacred mission. As the Secretary of Mar Thoma School, Maharashtra, I am privileged to be part of this esteemed institution, which has been standing tall since 1982 and is supported by a strong and vibrant alumni network.

Let us work together—parents, teachers, students, and the church—to ensure that our school remains a beacon of hope and a center of excellence.

Let every student who walks through our gates be lighted, so that they in turn may go out and lighten the world.

“Let us sacrifice our today so that our children can have a better tomorrow.”
— Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam
